How the Free Typing Test Works

Pick a test length — 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes or 5 minutes — then click the box and start typing the paragraph you see. The timer starts on your very first keystroke, and every letter you type is marked straight away: green for correct, red for wrong, with the next letter underlined. You can use Backspace to fix a mistake and keep going.

While you type, the tool shows your live WPM (words per minute), your accuracy, how many characters you got right, and your keystrokes per hour (KPH). WPM is your correct characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes you typed — so 300 correct characters in 1 minute is 60 WPM. When the time runs out, you get a results panel with your final WPM, accuracy, correct words and KPH, plus a printable certificate with your name on it. Try the 1-minute test first: the average typing speed is about 40 WPM, and 60 WPM is a strong score.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good typing speed?
For most people, 40 words per minute is a good typing speed. The average is about 40 WPM, office jobs usually ask for 40 to 60 WPM, and professional typists reach 60 to 80 WPM or more.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM is your correct characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes you typed. If you type 300 correct characters in 1 minute, that is 300 / 5 = 60 WPM. A word is counted as 5 characters, including spaces.
What is KPH?
KPH means keystrokes per hour — how many correct keys you press in an hour. Data-entry jobs often ask for 8,000 to 10,000 KPH or more. It is the same idea as WPM, measured over an hour instead of a minute.
