How the Credit Utilization Calculator Works

Credit utilization is the share of your available revolving credit that you are using: total balances ÷ total credit limits × 100. For example, $2,400 of balances across $14,000 of limits is about 17%.

Utilization is one of the biggest factors in credit scoring — commonly cited as around 30% of a FICO score — and it is also one of the fastest to change, since paying down a balance moves the ratio immediately. Guidance commonly cites staying under 30%, and under 10% for the strongest profiles, but these are rules of thumb, not published cutoffs.

Only revolving accounts count: credit cards and lines of credit. Mortgages and other installment loans are excluded, because scoring treats them differently. The same math applies to business credit cards: keep business utilization separate from personal cards, since it feeds a business credit profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good credit utilization rate?
Under 30% is the commonly cited ceiling, and under 10% is considered excellent. Lower is generally better, but the ratio is only one scoring factor among several.
Does paying down my balance help immediately?
Usually yes — utilization updates when the lender reports the new balance, typically at the next statement cycle, so the improvement shows up within weeks, not months.
Should I include all my cards?
Yes. Scoring models look at combined balances against combined limits, so include every revolving card, even ones with a zero balance — they raise your total limit.
Is 0% utilization best?
Not necessarily. A very small reported balance (1–3%) often scores slightly better than exactly zero, because it shows the card is in use; but the difference is small and never worth carrying debt for.
