To find how old you are, subtract your birth year from the current year, then subtract one if your birthday has not happened yet this year. For example, someone born in 1990 is 36 in 2026 if their birthday has passed, and 35 if it has not.
That one small adjustment is where most people go wrong. Age is not just the current year minus your birth year β it also depends on the month and day you were born, and on whether that date has already arrived this year. This guide gives you the quick lookup, the exact method, and a worked example, so you can answer the question with confidence. How Old Am I? Quick Lookup by Birth Year
The table below shows your age in 2026, depending on whether your birthday has already passed this year. Find your birth year, then pick the column that fits you.
| Birth year | Age if your birthday has passed in 2026 | Age if your birthday is still to come in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 1985 | 41 | 40 |
| 1990 | 36 | 35 |
| 1995 | 31 | 30 |
| 2000 | 26 | 25 |
| 2005 | 21 | 20 |
| 2010 | 16 | 15 |
| 2015 | 11 | 10 |
| 2020 | 6 | 5 |
The pattern is simple: every year, on your birthday, you move from the right-hand column to the left-hand column. So if you were born in 1995 and your birthday is in December, you are still 30 for most of 2026 β you turn 31 only when December arrives. If your birthday was in January, you have been 31 since January.
How to Calculate Your Exact Age, Step by Step
Your age in years is only part of the story. Forms, school admissions, and official records often want your exact age in years, months, and days. Here is the method that always works, known as the borrow-and-carry method.
Step 1: Write down the two dates. Put today's date on top and your date of birth below it, in day, month, and year columns.
Step 2: Subtract the days. If today's day number is smaller than your birth day number, borrow one month (that is, add the number of days in the previous month to today's day) and reduce the month by one.
Step 3: Subtract the months. If today's month number is now smaller than your birth month number, borrow one year (add 12 to the month) and reduce the year by one.
Step 4: Subtract the years. What is left is your exact age.
Worked Example: Born 14 March 1990
Let us work through a real example, using 4 November 2026 as today.
- Years: 2026 minus 1990 is 36. Because 14 March has already passed in 2026, no year needs to be borrowed, so the age is 36 years.
- Months: From 14 March to 14 November is 8 months, but today is only 4 November, 10 days short of 14 November. So we count 7 full months instead.
- Days: Those remaining 10 days are borrowed back in a different way: from 14 October to 4 November is 21 days (17 days left in October after the 14th, plus 4 days in November).
The exact age is therefore 36 years, 7 months, and 21 days. Notice how the simple year subtraction (2026 minus 1990 equals 36) gave the right number of years here β but only because the birthday had already passed. Had this person been born on 14 December 1990 instead, the same subtraction would have given 36, but the true age on 4 November 2026 would still be 35.
Why Counting Age by Hand Goes Wrong
There are three classic traps, and they catch almost everyone at some point.
The birthday trap. This is the biggest one. Subtracting birth year from the current year only works if your birthday has already happened this year. For roughly half the year, for any given person, it overstates their age by one.
Leap years. A year is not always 365 days. Every four years (with a few exceptions for century years), February has 29 days. That matters when you convert age into total days lived, because a 36-year-old born in March 1990 has lived through nine leap days β in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024. Ignoring them understates the total by more than a week.
Unequal months. Months are not all 30 days long. February has 28 or 29, April, June, September, and November have 30, and the rest have 31. So "one month old" means a different number of days depending on which month you are counting, which is why the borrow step above uses the actual previous month rather than a flat 30 days.
Your Age in Days, Weeks, and Hours
Once you have your exact age, the fun conversions follow easily β and they are a good check that your maths is right. Taking our worked example again, a person born on 14 March 1990 is 13,384 days old on 4 November 2026. That breaks down as 36 years (13,149 days, including the nine leap days) plus 235 days from 14 March to 4 November 2026.
- Days: 13,384 days
- Weeks: 13,384 divided by 7 equals 1,912 weeks exactly
- Hours: 13,384 times 24 equals 321,216 hours
These big numbers are also a useful reminder of why calculators beat mental maths for this job: one missed leap day, and every figure downstream is wrong. Our free Age Calculator handles leap years and month lengths automatically, so you get the exact figure without the borrowing and carrying.
What If You Were Born on 29 February?
Leap-day babies have a special case. Legally, in most places, a person born on 29 February turns a year older on 1 March in non-leap years (some places use 28 February), but socially most people celebrate on 28 February or 1 March, whichever they prefer. For age calculation, the rule is the same as for everyone else: you gain a year on your recognised birthday date in that year. So someone born on 29 February 2000 turned 26 in 2026 only after their recognised birthday date had passed β in practice, they celebrated in late February or on 1 March, and were 25 before that.
When You Actually Need Your Exact Age
Most of the time, "36" is enough. But some situations need the full figure:
- Official forms and IDs: passports, driving licences, and visa applications usually ask for your date of birth and work out the age themselves, but double-checking avoids a rejected form.
- School and exam eligibility: cut-off dates are often exact β a child who misses the cut-off by a single day may have to wait a whole year.
- Retirement and benefits: pension ages and benefit thresholds switch on a specific birthday, so the month and day matter, not just the year.
- Milestones: turning 18, 21, 30, or 65 is a big deal β and it happens on the day itself, not on 1 January of that year.
If any of these apply to you, use the exact method above or the calculator, rather than the quick table. A one-year error on a form can mean a delay, a re-application, or a missed deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions
How old am I if I was born in 1990?
In 2026, you are 36 if your birthday has already passed this year, and 35 if your birthday is still to come. On your birthday in 2026 you turn 36, and you stay 36 until your birthday in 2027.
How do I calculate my age in years, months, and days?
Subtract your birth date from today's date, borrowing a month when the day is too small and a year when the month is too small, as shown in the worked example above. For instance, someone born on 14 March 1990 is exactly 36 years, 7 months, and 21 days old on 4 November 2026.
Why does subtracting the birth year sometimes give the wrong age?
Because it ignores whether your birthday has happened yet this year. Subtracting the birth year alone gives your age at the end of the year, so it overstates your age by one for everyone whose birthday is still to come.
How old am I in days?
Multiply your full years by 365, add one day for each leap day you have lived through, then add the days since your last birthday. For example, a person born on 14 March 1990 has lived 13,384 days by 4 November 2026, which is also 1,912 weeks.
